A Brief History of Strathearn Preceptory

It is uncertain when the order was introduced into Strathearn, but we have warrant for believing that the lands of Concraig originally belonged to the Templars, and by them were granted to the Drummond family under the form of tenure known as "kindly tenancy." of these and several other lands, templemill alone remains as a memory of the Order in the Strath. the history of the order as it is now constituted commences with the year 1309, and for several centuries the knights templar existed in scotland-eften under persecution. in 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stewart was elected Grand Master, and high hopes were entertained for the future of the order; but these were shattered by the battle of Culloden. the most of the Templars went into exile with the prince, while those who remained fraternised with the Scottish Masonic body, under whose protection they began once more to assemble as a Fraternity, although there appears to be little cohesion among them. in 1808 Mr Alexander Deuchar was elected chief of the Edinburgh Templars. under him there was a convocation of all Scottish Templars held in Edinburgh, at which they annulled their connection with the Masons and asserted their ancient perogative. the Duke of Kent and Strathearn was invited to become their patron protector, to which request he acceded, and granted them a charter dated 19th june 1811.
there were still some of the original knights Templar resident in Crieff; and they, in 1815, obtained a charter from Mr Deuchar, the Supreme Grand Master of the Order in Scotland, forming them into a regular Encampment
